Employment law focuses on laws that govern people in the workplace. This course addresses the law governing the employment relationship, with particular attention to relevant contract and tort doctrines that apply to employment relationships. It will cover the expansion of employee and employer rights, rights against unjust dismissal, invasion of privacy and defamation, and will explore government regulations of the workplace in areas of occupational health and safety, wages, pensions, workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, hours, and benefits, family and medical leave, employee ownership of work product trade secrets, covenants not to compete, collective bargaining as well as employment discrimination law. Additionally, the course explores the legal regulation of work and the workplace in a non-union environment and requirements in a business such as how to legally hire evaluate and manage employees as a manager. In this course however, we will be mainly learning about the legal framework of employment law using TRNC law as a reference.
